Belgian Ales

In preparation for my trip to Belgium, I am researching Belgian Ales beyond my beloved Lindeman's Lambics. Today I bought all the ales pictured above at Total Wine & Spirits. First up, the Kasteel Rouge.

YUM!!!!!!!!!

I'm not always a fan of cherry-flavored things, tho I adore fresh cherries. The cherry notes in here are fresh notes and just a subtle add. Nothing to make you pucker or think you're drinking a weird Shirley Temple.

A product description:

Castle Red is the fruit beer of the Castle range.
Its unique dark red colour is obtained by mixing Castle brown that has been left to mature for at least 6 months with sour cherries.
Kasteel Rouge is aptly named for it’s deep, dark red color brought on by the addition of sour cherries to a base of brown ale, which is then left in the barrel for a six month period. This ale will surprise many with the sour of the cherries and the 8% alcohol level.
This beer has gastronomic qualities and can be drunk as an aperitif, with a BBQ, to accompany a dessert or simply as an outstanding real ale.

Castle Brewery has a very cool website.

Kasteel Rouge is 8% ABV. I wasn't sure if that was strong or weak. I admit to having a nice buzz at the end of the bottle. Nice enough that it's good that I am at home! A little more research shows most ales between 3-6% so I guess that's why it's a surprise.

The castle is in Ingelmunster, not far from Bruges where I may visit and never leave. 37 mere minutes by train. I may need to visit them!
